With the end of summer bringing unusually hot days in Japan, a crisp, pleasant September afternoon felt like a rare gift. I invited my mother to join me on a Tokyo Bay lunch cruise, and in this article, I’ll share the highlights of the experience, including scenic waterfront views, a full Italian lunch course, and tips for smooth boarding.
This relaxing half-day cruise offers a comfortable way to enjoy Tokyo’s waterfront scenery while savoring an Italian-style lunch onboard. It’s an easy and rewarding experience, especially for first-time visitors, families, or anyone looking for a calm break from the city.

Symphony Tokyo Bay Cruise
The Symphony Tokyo Bay Cruise departs from Hinode Pier, which is easily accessible from central Tokyo. The nearest station is Hinode Station on the Yurikamome Line, which is about a 3-minute walk from the pier. If you are coming from major areas like Shimbashi or Toyosu, the Yurikamome Line is the most convenient option. Since the train runs above ground for most of the route, you can enjoy scenic views of Tokyo Bay along the way.
For those using JR lines, Hamamatsucho Station is also within walking distance (around 15–20 minutes), offering another convenient route.
That summer in Japan was filled with dangerously hot days, so a day this comfortable was extremely rare. I couldn’t let such a perfect day go to waste, so I decided to spend it on a relaxing cruise around Tokyo Bay. As soon as we stepped off at Hinode Station, a beautiful blue view opened up before us. The white cruise ship, with the city skyline behind it, was shining brightly in the sunlight. Just thinking that we would soon be strolling across the sea on that ship filled me with excitement.
As we were exploring the terminal after arriving, a group of Hato Bus tour customers arrived by bus. Hato Bus is a popular sightseeing bus service in Japan. We were saying that independent travel is great, but it’s also nice to just sit back and let someone take you around.

We experienced the lunch cruise, but there are also dining options inside Hi-NODE, near the waiting area. As an alternative, you could have lunch there first and then enjoy the 50-minute coffee and dessert cruise. But if you want to see more of the landmarks along the route and enjoy the experience at a relaxed pace, the lunch cruise is recommended.

Before You Board: Check-in & Waiting Area
For the Symphony Cruise, you need to complete the check-in process at the Hinode Pier Office counter at least 15 minutes before departure. It is recommended to arrive at the waiting area about 30 minutes before departure to allow enough time. We also arrived about 30 minutes before departure and completed the check-in process right away. After that, we started exploring the waiting area.

Recommended Drinks & Snacks
Inside the waiting area, there was the Symphony Cruise reception counter, comfortable seating, and a café. If you find yourself with some time to spare, I highly recommend stopping by the terminal café. During my visit, I tried the homemade marmalade soda, which had the bright, slightly bitter aroma of real orange peel rather than an artificial sweetness.
When I hear something is “homemade,” I can’t help but choose it, wondering how it will turn out. Sipping a special drink while watching the harbor before departure makes even the waiting time feel like a memorable part of the journey.
Onboard the Symphony Moderna
And now, our two-hour cruise is finally beginning—right on schedule at 11:50 a.m. The white ship and fluffy clouds really pop against the blue sea and sky. We made our way across the gangway and onto the ship. All the staff were friendly and greeted us warmly. From the pier, you can see the Rainbow Bridge and Odaiba.
The gangway led directly to the second floor of the ship.
On that floor was our reserved restaurant, Four Seasons, and in front of it was a staircase that led up to the third floor. The handrail of the staircase was a lovely gold and had been polished to a bright, glossy finish. Even if it’s not a large cruise ship, an elegant interior like this really brightens my mood. Holding back our urge to explore the ship, we first headed to the restaurant.
Accessibility Note for Families
The 2nd floor, which includes the boarding area and restaurant, is fully barrier-free along with the restrooms. However, please note that the upper observation decks can only be reached via stairs.
Italian Lunch Experience
The cruise departs from Hinode Pier and loops around Tokyo Bay, passing under the Rainbow Bridge, Haneda Airport’s flight paths, and the Tokyo Gate Bridge.
The earlier ship has left, and it’s finally our turn to depart. There was hardly any movement, and the ship departed so smoothly that we didn’t even realize it.
We booked an Italian course meal for our lunch.
Menu Highlights: Seafood & Dessert
Since we had just enjoyed cold drinks at the café, we didn’t order any additional beverages. If we weren’t allergic to alcohol, we might have chosen a glass of wine, which looked like a lovely way to enjoy the meal, just as the other guests were doing.
Appetizers
Among the appetizers, the first thing worth mentioning is the fish terrine. It had a light, fluffy texture with the rich flavor of the fish tightly sealed inside. Also, it was accompanied by a variety of vegetables, which I enjoyed slowly.
Pasta
The short pasta with whitebait that came next was also deeply flavorful, as the pasta had absorbed all the richness of the fish. The boiled whitebait was plump and tender, and it’s one of my favorite Japanese ingredients. Its light saltiness made it so appetizing that I couldn’t stop eating.
Fish
The fish dish was salmon, served with a slightly tangy mustard sauce. It was topped with crispy fried leeks, which were freshly fried and delightfully light, leaving no fibrous bits in the mouth. I felt that even the toppings were prepared with great care.
In addition, two types of bread were served, both warm and full of flavor, complementing the other dishes beautifully.
Sweet Treats
The homemade dessert was just as delightful. The seasonal Shine Muscat grapes and the cool sorbet were the perfect treats for this day at the end of summer. Having several kinds of desserts makes it so much fun to decide which one to start with, and I love the time spent discussing it with my mother. I truly love dessert plates filled with an assortment of sweets.
Coffee
How delicious coffee tastes when someone makes it for you. It’s truly a precious moment for someone like me, who’s usually the one serving my family. The rich aroma of the carefully dripped coffee filled the air, soothing and relaxing us.
Sightseeing Highlights
Don’t miss the view of the sea. The ship moves completely smoothly, and the scenery outside constantly surprises me. Enjoying a meal while the landscape changes around you makes a lunch cruise a unique experience.
As you can see here, we cruised past Odaiba and the industrial zones, catching sight of Haneda Airport just like this. The sunlight made the water shimmer beautifully.
And just when I thought I was seeing a large cruise ship, it turned out to be Tokyo DisneySea. Tokyo DisneySea’s S.S. Columbia also has a wonderful lounge, which I hope to show you someday.
Onboard Gift Shops
After finishing our lunch amid the ever-changing scenery, we headed out to explore the ship. Since we had eaten on the second floor, we went up one level and found several gift shops on the third floor.
They offered a variety of souvenirs, including original sweets, toys for children, and beautifully designed stationery. Among them was the truffle salt rusk we had sampled earlier at the café in the waiting area. It had a light, crisp texture with just the right amount of salt, and the rich, savory flavor of the truffle really stood out. I hesitated and ended up not buying it, but honestly, I wish I had. I still think about that flavor from time to time, and it makes me want to try it again. If I see it on my next visit, I’ll definitely pick some up.
Out to the Deck
Going up one more level, we could step out onto the deck.
Although it was September, a gentle breeze was blowing in from the north, making the weather pleasantly comfortable. When we stepped outside, we could see Odaiba in the distance. It made me feel a little sad, knowing that we were nearing the end of our journey.
As we enjoyed the sea breeze, we made our way up to the next deck.
As we reached the top, the view suddenly opened up and we could see much farther ahead. I was a bit worried about my stamina, so I hesitated before climbing the stairs. In the end, I went up, and the scenery was so beautiful that I can definitely recommend it for those who are feeling energetic. My mother murmured that she felt comfortable, looking a little sleepy.
As we made our way to the back of the deck, we could see the route we had traveled over the blue sea. Seagulls and planes were constantly flying overhead, and for someone used to city life, the view felt wonderfully vast and freeing.
Whether you’re exploring tourist attractions or just strolling around your neighborhood, don’t forget to glance back every now and then—you might find a stunning view waiting for you.
And now, we were finally about to pass under the Rainbow Bridge for the second time. The first time, we were watching from inside the restaurant, but seeing it outdoors has so much more impact. I sometimes cross this bridge by car or train, but looking at it from below really makes me realize just how massive this structure is.
At the end of the cruise, we were lucky enough to enjoy a live lobby concert by a soprano singer. She performed songs like “Time to Say Goodbye” and “Shōnen Jidai,” a beloved classic that represents the Japanese summer, right up close. It was a truly wonderful experience that engaged all the senses—not just the eyes and the palate, but also the ears, along with the gentle sea breeze.

Final Thoughts
I often see travel shows featuring cruises from all over the world, but in reality, it’s not so easy to actually go on one. For us, this lunch cruise was a fantastic experience. In just one day, we enjoyed a touch of luxury. During the harsh summer, we could hardly spend any time outdoors, so relaxing on the sea while feeling the breeze provided us with the ultimate healing experience.
