Hoshino Coffee
Hoshino Coffee is a Japanese coffee shop chain with a classic, elegant style. Some locations feature high ceilings and beautiful chandeliers, creating a cozy yet refined atmosphere. It’s a lovely place to relax over a cup of hand-dripped coffee or enjoy one of its popular soufflé pancakes. You can also find many Hoshino Coffee locations near train stations.

Hoshino Coffee offers a wide variety of coffee, including three basic options. The menu carefully describes the flavor of each coffee, making it a pleasure to take your time and decide which one to try. Coffee prices start at around ¥500 (approx. $3.2 / €2.9), and specialty coffees are also available.
I’ll share my favorite menu items to enjoy alongside Hoshino Coffee’s carefully hand-dripped coffee, freshly brewed one cup at a time.
Hoshino Spaghetti
Hoshino Spaghetti is Japanese-style spaghetti with rich soy sauce and butter, packed with various ingredients.
It’s topped with generous portions of vegetables cut into large pieces, bacon, and a soft-boiled egg. When you break the egg and mix it in, it creates a rich, creamy flavor. As a signature pasta dish named after the coffee shop, it’s a unique item on the menu.
It costs around ¥1,000 (approx. $6.4 / €5.7). You can also get a small discount when you order a drink with your meal.
Hoshino Beef Curry
Hoshino Beef Curry is another signature dish named after Hoshino, featuring Japanese-style curry with tender beef.

It has a wonderful depth of flavor, with a spicy kick, natural sweetness, and tender slow-cooked beef. Although it’s a little spicy, the crispy fried onions and fukujinzuke pickles on the side make each bite even more satisfying. You’ll find yourself reaching for another spoonful before you know it! It’s also nice that it isn’t overly rich or heavy. It costs around ¥1,000 (approx. $6.4 / €5.7).
I like to pair a hot dish like this with an iced coffee.
There’s nothing better than enjoying a cold iced coffee between bites of spicy curry.
At Hoshino Coffee, it’s served in a copper mug packed with ice, keeping it refreshingly cold. The iced coffee is prepared fresh in the shop each day using a special blend that retains its rich flavor even when served cold.
French Toast Morning Set
Many Hoshino Coffee locations open in the morning. You can enjoy toast with your coffee at no extra charge, or choose other breakfast options for around ¥200 extra (approx. $1.3 / €1.1).
For the morning set, you can also choose Hoshino Coffee’s signature soufflé pancakes, baked in the oven. But my recommendation is the moist French toast, which comes with a small salad and a boiled egg. It’s topped with whipped butter, powdered sugar, and sliced almonds, with a crispy, toasted exterior.
It costs around ¥700 (approx. $4.5 / €4.0), including coffee. If, like me, you prefer a satisfying texture that lets you enjoy the ingredients rather than something that melts in your mouth, this is a great choice.
The morning set is a great breakfast option. However, not all locations offer morning sets, so it’s best to check in advance. There are savory options as well as sweet ones.
Komeda Coffee
Komeda Coffee originated in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, a city famous for its morning service culture. At Komeda Coffee, you can enjoy toast with your morning drink at no extra charge. You can choose from a boiled egg, egg spread, or sweet red bean paste to go with your toast. Coffee prices start at around ¥500 (approx. $3.2 / €2.9).
Komeda Coffee has a cozy, traditional coffee shop atmosphere, with warm wood interiors and comfortable sofas. Although the coffee isn’t hand-dripped, you can enjoy its long-loved original blend in a relaxed setting.
Komeda Coffee’s Morning Set
One of Komeda Coffee’s best-known items is Shiro-Noir, a warm Danish pastry topped with soft-serve ice cream. However, what I’d especially recommend trying is its morning set.

I ordered the newly added combination of a round bun and egg spread. Since it was a hot day, I chose iced coffee. The round bun has a chewier texture and a touch of sweetness compared to the sliced bread.
If you want to try a classic combination, I recommend hot coffee with toast and sweet red bean paste. Although bread and sweet red bean paste have long been enjoyed together in Tokyo, toast served with sweet red bean paste as part of Nagoya’s distinctive morning service has become a popular breakfast option.

Even when you order just a coffee, a small packet of roasted beans is served on the side, adding a thoughtful touch that makes you feel welcome to relax and enjoy your time.
Coffee-Kan
Coffee-Kan is a Japanese coffee shop chain where you can enjoy coffee brewed using a siphon or the hand-drip method. The atmosphere is fairly simple and casual, making it a comfortable place to stop for a cup of coffee.
Coffee-Kan offers a variety of coffees, including its classic Coffee-Kan Blend, charcoal-roasted coffee, and specialty coffee. Prices are around ¥600 (approx. $3.8 / €3.4) per cup.

At Coffee-Kan, I always order the Coffee-Kan Blend. It’s nice to have each cup freshly brewed just for you, making your usual coffee break feel a little more special.
The Coffee-Kan Blend has a slightly fruity flavor and is smooth and refreshing even when enjoyed black. The menu provides detailed descriptions of each coffee’s flavor profile, making it easy to find one that suits your taste.
Traditional Hotcakes
Coffee-Kan is famous for its Traditional Hotcakes, cooked on a copper griddle. Each hotcake is carefully cooked to order, so it takes a little while, but the result is a beautifully golden-brown finish.
I ordered the tropical hotcakes, available for a limited time during the summer. The fluffy, golden-brown hotcakes were topped with a generous amount of cream, while the tangy passion fruit sauce added a refreshing, summery flavor. It cost around ¥1,200 (approx. $7.7 / €6.8).
Depending on the location, they may be served on a cute plate, which is a lovely little touch.
Pizza Toast
Coffee-Kan also offers a variety of savory dishes, but I especially recommend the pizza toast.
A slice of bread is topped with Coffee-Kan’s special pizza sauce, crunchy onions, egg spread, and a generous layer of mild, stretchy cheese, then toasted until golden brown.
Unlike the tomato sauce used on Italian pizza, Coffee-Kan’s special pizza sauce has a sweet and tangy flavor. The onions and green peppers add a little bite, while the occasional taste of egg spread balances everything with a mild, creamy flavor. The milky, stretchy cheese adds even more deliciousness with every bite.
A hot coffee tastes even better after finishing every last bite of the toast, including its crispy crust. At the time of my visit, it cost around ¥700 (approx. $4.5 / €4.0), with no set discount available.
Coffee-Kan Kura
Let me introduce Coffee-Kan Kura, a special type of Coffee-Kan location found mainly in suburban areas.
Many Coffee-Kan locations have simple interiors, but Kura stands out with its traditional Japanese-style building and courtyard. The location I visited also featured a beautiful gold folding screen, as you can see in the photo.
The overall design is chic and understated, creating an elegant atmosphere reminiscent of a high-end traditional Japanese restaurant.
The menu is largely the same as at regular Coffee-Kan locations, but the cups are different, adding an extra special touch to the coffee experience.
They poured the coffee from the siphon right at my table, which made the experience feel even more special.
Behind the counter, a variety of coffee cups are displayed on the wall. I heard that when the shop isn’t busy and time allows, you can even request a cup of your choice. I’d love to try that on my next visit.
Conclusion
Each of these three Japanese coffee shop chains offers a slightly different experience. Hoshino Coffee is a lovely choice for carefully hand-dripped coffee and a relaxed atmosphere, while Komeda Coffee is perfect for enjoying Nagoya’s distinctive morning service culture. Coffee-Kan offers individually brewed coffee and tasty café-style dishes, with some locations providing a particularly elegant setting.
If you’re planning to visit one of these coffee shops, I recommend checking the photos on Google Maps before you go. The atmosphere and menu can vary by location, so looking at photos of the specific store can help you choose one that suits your preferences.
