Echigo-Yuzawa: A Ski Resort Town in Niigata
Echigo-Yuzawa is a mountain resort town in Niigata Prefecture, best known for its ski resorts and hot springs. It takes about 1 hour and 10 minutes to reach Echigo-Yuzawa from Ueno Station by the Joetsu Shinkansen.

It is a popular destination in winter, when people come to enjoy skiing and snowboarding. But Echigo-Yuzawa is not only a winter destination. The surrounding mountains and natural scenery can also be enjoyed during the warmer months.
Yuzawa Kogen: An Easy Way to See the Mountains
Yuzawa Kogen is a mountain resort known for its ski slopes in winter. The ropeway station is about a 10-minute walk from Echigo-Yuzawa Station. Outside the winter ski season, visitors can take the ropeway up the mountain and enjoy panoramic views, fresh greenery, and walks surrounded by nature.
When I visited, the round-trip ropeway fare was ¥3,500 (approx. $22.3 / €19.5) for adults and ¥1,700 (approx. $10.8 / €9.5) for elementary school children. Prices may vary depending on the season and ticket type, so please check the official website for the latest information before your visit.
Buying your ticket in advance may be cheaper than purchasing a same-day ticket, so it’s worth checking the options before your visit.
How to Get to Echigo-Yuzawa from Tokyo
For this trip, I decided to take the Shinkansen from Ueno Station to Echigo-Yuzawa.
| Train | Route | Time |
| Toki 315 | Ueno → Echigo-Yuzawa | 10:21 → 11:31 |
| Tanigawa 412 | Echigo-Yuzawa → Ueno | 16:00 → 17:14 |

The Joetsu Shinkansen has a sophisticated design, with blue and soft bronze accents on its exterior.
The Shinkansen platforms at Ueno Station are located underground. Ueno Station is more compact than Tokyo Station, but since it is an intermediate stop, the train does not stay for long. Be sure to be ready to board so you don’t miss your train.

I was honestly surprised that I could reach Echigo-Yuzawa in Niigata from Tokyo in just a little over an hour.

Lunch at Hifumi in Echigo-Yuzawa
For lunch, I ate at Hifumi, a restaurant specializing in fish from the Sea of Japan, about a 7-minute walk from Echigo-Yuzawa Station.

Mountain vegetables were still in season when I visited, so I ordered two dishes. I wasn’t very familiar with them, but the staff kindly helped me choose what to order.

I also ordered grilled fish and added a rice set. The rice was local Koshihikari rice, and for an extra charge, I changed the miso soup to one made with freshly harvested mountain bamboo shoots.

If I had visited a little later, I could have tried ayu (sweetfish), as the fishing season here begins around July. The seafood selection changes with the seasons, so I recommend asking the staff what’s in season during your visit.
Each dish was carefully prepared, and I enjoyed trying a little of everything.
When to Visit for Lunch
To avoid the crowds, I arrived before noon. It was a quiet weekday in town, but there were several groups of what seemed to be local customers at the restaurant.
The restaurant did not become full while I was having lunch, but it may be busier on weekends and holidays.
Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway
After another 3-minute walk, I could see the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway building. I bought my ticket at the ticket counter and then headed to the boarding area.

The Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway is the main way to reach Yuzawa Kogen Panorama Park. Yuzawa Kogen is a ski resort in winter and operates as Yuzawa Kogen Panorama Park during the warmer months.
The boarding area was surprisingly spacious, which makes sense since the ropeway is also used by skiers and snowboarders during the winter season.

Since it was a weekday, there weren’t many other passengers. As the ropeway began to climb, I could already see the surrounding mountains through the large windows.
The ride to the top took about seven minutes. The ropeway runs every 10–20 minutes, with more frequent departures during busy periods. Please note that it may be closed on certain days for maintenance, so it’s a good idea to check before your visit.
Yuzawa Kogen Panorama Park
When I arrived at the mountain-top station, I found a café right away. Inside, the stylish interior offered beautiful mountain views. From here, I could see the town where I had just been, stretching out at the foot of the mountains.

Stepping outside, I found that the café had a charming exterior like this. It had a fresh, modern feel, as if it had been built recently.

Stepping outside the mountain-top station, I could see distant mountains that weren’t visible from below. Streaks of snow still remained on the higher peaks. If I had visited a little earlier, I might have been able to see more snow-covered mountain peaks.

People were relaxing on benches, taking in the beautiful scenery. In mid-June, just before Japan’s rainy season, sunny days can be quite hot. But up here, it was a little cooler and comfortable.
There was also a foot bath, so I decided to give it a try. It was quite hot, though, so it might be especially nice during the colder months.
Yuzawa Kogen is also worth considering in winter if you want to enjoy snowy mountain scenery without skiing or climbing a mountain. The ropeway makes it easy to reach the mountain-top area and take in the views. Be sure to dress warmly and wear appropriate footwear for snowy conditions.
Kumo Cafe in Yuzawa Kogen
I went back to the café, bought a drink, and decided to take a break while enjoying the beautiful scenery.
I ordered a smoothie made with Le Lectier, a pear variety from Niigata. After lunch, the cold drink was wonderfully refreshing. From my seat, I could also see the ropeway going up and down the mountain.
There seemed to be three other restaurants within Yuzawa Kogen Panorama Park. Some had a cozy mountain-lodge feel, while others looked like they offered beautiful views. Next time, I might try having a meal at one of them.
Exploring Yuzawa Kogen Panorama Park
After taking in the beautiful mountain views, I decided to take a walk and enjoy more of the greenery around me.
The park is surrounded by trees and greenery, but the paths are well maintained. As long as you stay on the paths, regular sneakers are fine for walking around. In fact, I even came across a group of children from a nearby nursery school out for a walk.
I made my way to a pond located further into the park.

Although the irises, or “ayame,” were not in bloom, but the pond reflected the surrounding trees and greenery, creating a beautiful, almost picture-perfect scene.
Further along the walking path, I came to a botanical garden area. Many people were busy maintaining the gardens and planting flowers.
I enjoyed walking through the garden while admiring the lovely flowers. Since the path had been downhill all the way, I decided to take the free lift back up to the top.
It is also used as a ski lift in winter. Like the ropeway, I felt that the lift was more than just a way to get around. It was also a fun way to enjoy the scenery.

As I went back up, the lovely green maple leaves swayed in the breeze, almost as if they were waving to me.
Below me, I could also see the summer bobsleigh track. There seemed to be other activities in the park as well, such as a zipline and go-karts.
After that, I took the ropeway back down the mountain and returned to Echigo-Yuzawa Station, browsing for souvenirs along the way.
Echigo-Yuzawa Station also has a large shopping area with plenty of local souvenirs, as well as places where you can enjoy Niigata sake. If you’re interested, I recommend allowing some extra time for shopping before your train.
Bear Safety Note
Echigo-Yuzawa is surrounded by mountains and natural areas where bears may be present. Before visiting Yuzawa Kogen, check the latest local bear sightings and safety information, especially if you plan to walk beyond the main resort areas.
For a safer visit, stay on designated paths and follow any instructions or warnings provided by the resort or local authorities.
Food Souvenirs from Echigo-Yuzawa
Here are some local food souvenirs I bought in Echigo-Yuzawa.

Niigata is famous for its delicious rice, so I bought rice crackers made with Niigata rice and the region’s specialty, sasa dango. There were so many flavors of rice crackers that I had a hard time choosing.
Sasa dango is a traditional Niigata sweet made with chewy mochi filled with sweet red bean paste and wrapped in bamboo leaves. The bamboo leaf gave the dumpling a lovely aroma. I heard that the taste of sasa dango can vary from shop to shop, so I bought some from two different shops to compare them.
Sasa dango is soft when freshly made, but it can become firm when refrigerated or after some time. If you buy some, I recommend trying it soon while it’s still soft.
If you enjoy sake, local Niigata sake also makes a nice souvenir. Echigo-Yuzawa Station has plenty of souvenir shops, so you can pick up a variety of things while waiting for your train.
Conclusion
My day trip to Echigo-Yuzawa in June turned out to be a refreshing escape from Tokyo. I enjoyed the mountain views from Yuzawa Kogen, walked through the greenery, and even found a little snow still remaining on the distant peaks.
What I liked most was how easy it was to enjoy the mountains without having to climb one. The Shinkansen ride from Ueno was quick, and the ropeway made it simple to reach the mountain-top area.
Echigo-Yuzawa is well known as a winter ski destination, but I found that there was plenty to enjoy in the warmer months, too. If you’re looking for an easy day trip from Tokyo where you can enjoy fresh air, beautiful scenery, and a taste of local Niigata food, Yuzawa Kogen could be a lovely option.
