Autumn is one of my favorite times of year in Tokyo. As the weather cools down, it’s a lovely time to explore gardens, cafés, hot springs, and nearby destinations on a day trip from the city.

Over the years, I’ve visited several places around Tokyo in autumn, from colorful Japanese gardens and seasonal roses to relaxing cafés and coastal escapes. In this guide, I’ll share some of my favorite places to enjoy autumn in Tokyo, based on my own experiences.

If you’re planning a trip to Tokyo in October or November and wondering where to enjoy the season, I hope this guide gives you some ideas for your own trip.

What you will find in this guide:

  • Where to go: Gardens, autumn roses, cafés, and seasonal spots in Tokyo
  • What to eat: Seasonal sweets, traditional Kyoto cuisine, and autumn treats
  • Day trips from Tokyo: Relaxing autumn escapes to Karuizawa and Atami
  • When to go: What Tokyo is like in October and November, including weather and autumn foliage
  • My experiences: Personal tips and things I enjoyed during my autumn visits

Tokyo Weather in October and November

October is generally mild and comfortable in Tokyo, while November is cooler and more autumn-like. Both months are good times to explore gardens and neighborhoods around the city.

In November, the average daytime high is around 17°C (63°F), while mornings and evenings are cooler, averaging around 9°C (48°F). It’s a good time for walking through gardens and neighborhoods, especially as autumn colors begin to appear.

Rainy days are not unusual in autumn, but they can also make Tokyo’s gardens and streets look especially beautiful, with wet leaves and a quiet, peaceful atmosphere.

Mornings and evenings can feel chilly, especially on windy days, so a light coat is useful. If you’re traveling to Japan, picking up a lightweight, packable jacket from stores like UNIQLO can also be a fun little part of your trip. It’s easy to carry with you and handy when you need an extra layer.

Gardens & Autumn Colors

Autumn is a beautiful time to explore Tokyo’s gardens. As the leaves begin to change color, traditional Japanese gardens take on a completely different atmosphere, with shades of red, orange, and yellow adding to the scenery.

I’ve visited several gardens and seasonal spots around Tokyo, and each has its own way of enjoying autumn. Here are a few places I’ve visited, along with some seasonal ideas for enjoying autumn in Japan.

Koishikawa Korakuen Gardens in November

If you’re looking for a place to enjoy autumn foliage in Tokyo, Koishikawa Korakuen is a beautiful garden to add to your list.

Koishikawa Korakuen is conveniently located in central Tokyo, just a short walk from Suidobashi Station. It is also accessible from Korakuen Station and sits right next to Tokyo Dome.

Here, you can easily step away from the busy city and explore a traditional Japanese garden that dates back to the early Edo period. It’s a wonderful place to experience autumn colors and a little taste of old Tokyo without having to travel far from the city center.

There were also some fun seasonal touches during my visit. A dango stall was set up for the autumn foliage season, and I enjoyed soy sauce-flavored dango, chewy Japanese rice-flour dumplings. Since it was a holiday, I also happened to see a traditional Dai-Kagura performance, a form of Japanese acrobatics.

The best time to see the autumn foliage varies each year, but it is generally around late November. The official website provides updates on the foliage conditions, which I found very helpful when planning my visit. I recommend checking the latest update before you go.

One of my favorite moments was enjoying matcha and seasonal wagashi at Kantokutei, a traditional-style restaurant inside the garden.

I sat by the large windows with a warm cup of matcha while looking out at the autumn leaves. The wagashi was inspired by a chrysanthemum that blooms from late autumn into early winter, making it a lovely seasonal touch.

I visited Koishikawa Korakuen in late November and found it a lovely place to enjoy autumn leaves, a traditional Japanese garden, seasonal sweets, and a little traditional culture without leaving central Tokyo. Autumn Roses

If you love roses, there are beautiful gardens in and around Tokyo where you can enjoy a different side of autumn. Two places to consider are Kyu-Furukawa Gardens in Tokyo and Keisei Rose Garden in Chiba.

Kyu-Furukawa Gardens is located near Komagome Station on the Yamanote Line, which runs around central Tokyo. Keisei Rose Garden is in Chiba Prefecture and can also be reached easily from Tokyo by direct train services.

I visited both rose gardens during their spring rose festivals, but they are also beautiful places to enjoy autumn roses and seasonal scenery. While I haven’t visited them in autumn myself, both gardens hold autumn rose events and offer a different atmosphere later in the year.

Along with its Western-style garden and roses, Kyu-Furukawa Gardens also features a traditional Japanese garden, where you can enjoy autumn foliage and matcha in a Japanese tea house. For the latest information on the best time to visit and seasonal events, please check the official website before your visit.

Autumn Cafés & City Walks

Autumn is also a lovely time to slow down and enjoy Tokyo’s neighborhoods at a more relaxed pace. Instead of heading to a famous sightseeing spot, you can spend a few hours walking around the city, discovering cafés, and taking a break with something seasonal.

An Autumn Chocolate Cake in Nihonbashi

Nihonbashi is one area I enjoy for this kind of leisurely outing. Its historic streets, department stores, shops, and cafés make it easy to combine a little sightseeing with a relaxing café stop.

In autumn, I visited green bean to bar CHOCOLATE, a bean-to-bar chocolate specialty café in Nihonbashi, and enjoyed a rich chocolate cake that was perfect for the season.

Nihonbashi is a great area for combining a leisurely walk with a café stop, with historic streets, shops, and department stores all within easy reach.

If you’re looking for a relaxing way to experience Tokyo in the fall, taking a break at a café after exploring the neighborhood can be a lovely part of your trip.

Nihonbashi also has plenty of other cafés worth checking out. Discover more of my Nihonbashi café experiences below:

Autumn Lunch at Tankuma: A Taste of Kyoto in Tokyo

In autumn, I visited Yugyoan Tankuma Kitamise in Suidobashi, a long-established restaurant specializing in traditional Kyoto cuisine. From the dining area, I enjoyed views of Tokyo Dome while savoring beautifully presented seasonal dishes.

I was especially looking forward to trying yuba, a Kyoto specialty. During my visit, I also enjoyed seasonal flavors such as matsutake mushrooms, followed by an elegant assortment of fruits and Japanese and Western sweets for dessert.

The menu may have changed since my visit, but you can still enjoy seasonal flavors at the restaurant throughout the year. It was a lovely way to experience the flavors of autumn through traditional Kyoto cuisine in the heart of Tokyo.

Yugyoan Tankuma Kitamise is located near Koishikawa Korakuen, one of Tokyo’s beautiful traditional gardens. You can enjoy an autumn lunch at Tankuma and then take a walk through the garden to see the fall foliage.

Autumn Day Trips from Tokyo

Autumn is also a wonderful time to take a day trip from Tokyo and enjoy a change of scenery. From mountain towns to coastal destinations, there are plenty of places where you can experience the season outside the city.

Here are some autumn day trips from Tokyo that I’ve enjoyed or that are worth considering for your trip.

A Relaxing Autumn Escape to Karuizawa

In October, my mother and I took a day trip from Tokyo to Karuizawa in Nagano by Shinkansen. The journey took about one hour, making it an easy escape from the city.

It was a rainy day and a little too early for the autumn colors. Still, the cool mountain air, misty scenery, peaceful nature, and cozy cafés gave the day a special atmosphere. We also enjoyed a seasonal lunch, a quiet walk, coffee in a beautiful cup, and some local sweets.

Karuizawa is a lovely option if you want to combine nature, cafés, shopping, and a refreshing mountain atmosphere on a day trip from Tokyo. If you’d like to see more photos and details about our lunch, sightseeing, cafés, and practical travel tips, check out my full guide below.

An Autumn Hot Spring Escape to Atami

In early October, my mother and I took a day trip from Tokyo to Atami aboard the Saphir Odoriko, a luxury sightseeing train. The top photo shows the café at Ocean Spa Fuua, where we enjoyed the hot springs.

Atami is about 1 hour and 10 minutes from Shinagawa Station in Tokyo.

The autumn scenery along the coast made the journey itself part of the experience. After arriving in Atami, we enjoyed fresh local seafood, took a relaxing walk by the sea, and spent some time at an oceanfront hot spring spa overlooking the water. The cool autumn air was especially pleasant while soaking in the outdoor baths.

Atami is a great option if you want to combine sea views, local food, and hot springs in a relaxing day trip from Tokyo. For more photos and details about the train, food, spa, and itinerary, check out my full guide below.
